Lexington Help Joel Gain Experience In The Kitchen

Lexington Catering, one of the leading contract caterers, teamed up with Dreams Come True, a children’s charity, to fulfil Joel’s dream of cooking with some of the very top chefs.

Joel, aged 19, from the Isle-of-Wight, has a life-threatening condition (Hodgkin’s lymphoma), which has prevented him from doing everything he wants to do over the years. Desperate to leave the daily reminders of treatment behind him, Joel wanted to focus on something he enjoyed – cooking.

Lexington Catering worked with Dreams Come True to organise a fantastic cooking experience in London, which included a visits to a number of Lexington client sites, Borough Market, Fortnum & Mason and The Duck and Waffle.

Joel even got to put on his chef whites and cook alongside award-winning chefs at Galvin HOP and The Ritz.

Joel said, “I have always had an interest in cooking and found it to be a great escape throughout my treatment. I am eager to pursue this as a career and have already started working in a local kitchen since the trip.”

Joel’s Mum was particularly thrilled with a special afternoon tea in the Palm Court, where her son had arranged for the chef to ice a cake saying: ‘To Mum, Thanks for everything.’

Rob Kirby, Chef Director at Lexington, worked with the team to ensure Joel got the every best experience during his day with the chefs. Rob says, “Seeing the enjoyment Joel gets from cooking and food is what it is all about. He is a real foodie and it was fabulous to be able to help create a day he will remember.”

Jo Sorg, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Dreams Come True, says, “Joel has had a dreadful time over the last couple of years but this dream has given him and his Mum an enormous boost. Lexington helped us with this dream from the very beginning by arranging for Joel to cook with some of the best chefs and visit some kitchens.

“Many of our dream families feel very low with the gruelling treatment they go through and the loneliness that can bring so these dreams can have a transformational effect on them.”

Dreams Come True work hard to make dreams come true for children, across the UK, with serious and life-limiting conditions. Over the last 29 years the charity has brought happiness and joy to more than five thousand children as well as their family and carers. To find out more visit www.dreamscometrue.uk.com
