On Thursday 1st March, Simon Merrick, Sous Chef at Royal Bank of Canada, lead a team of four Lexington Client Support volunteers assisting food charity FareShare for the day.
This marked the start of the CSR driven LexingTEN calendar of events which are taking place throughout 2012 in celebration of Lexington’s tenth birthday.
FareShare are a food distribution charity who collect food from food companies/stores and redistribute it to charities working with homeless and other disadvantaged people. They also provide cooking classes for low income families to show how they can cook healthy, economical meals. Simon and the team spent the day working at the FareShare warehouse in Bermondsey receiving food deliveries, repacking and then delivering to charities, such as the YMCA, across London.
The Lexington team were welcomed by Mick and his team of volunteers at FareShare who lead a tour of the warehouse before providing boots and high visibility jackets so that the Lexy chefs could get stuck in!
Simon Merrick said “I was amazed at how good the quality of the food was that had been collected from the supermarkets. It makes you realise how important organisations like this are, fighting food poverty in the UK whilst also reducing food waste.”
Simon and the Lexy team are looking to work with FareShare on a more regular basis throughout 2012 and beyond so that the charity’s excellent work can continue to grow and reach those most in need.
